What if you're drained of even a shred of creativity?
... and you can't get your writing mojo back
Some of my best work— and most of my work that’s been published—has come from writing prompts. And, in truth, most of my uninspired work also came from writing prompts; ones that just couldn’t pull me out of my nothing-to-say state.
It’s those good prompts, the ones that make me feel like I’m someone onstage at a spiritual revival and a preacher has clapped his hand to my forehead; the prompt (mentally speaking) makes me collapse backward like I’ve been spirit-slain. Emptied. Refilled.
Those are the ones that make me write. Write like hell.
I long to share those kinds of prompts with you; ones I’ve collected, fashioned, conjured over the 13 years that I’ve been leading Women At Woodstock writing retreats; prompts that will invade your brain and push you back to something big that you’ve lived: In pain. In joy. As a profound discovery. Depthless sorrow. Or, dare I say it, revelation. Something you suddenly want to write about. Right now.
Join me for 6 intense writing sessions where I will give you nuanced, thought-provoking prompts that will tap into what you have lived and pull it out of you—almost against your will.
Yeah, like that...
I’ll be sharing my prompts with a small group of writers who crave inspiration, who need the impetus to leap forward into a Wild Ride of Writing. No time spent discussing craft, or technique, or structure. or arc. Just a spirit-slaying prompt, a retreat into yourself, and let ‘er rip.
What am I talking about? Here’s one example:
Prompt:
An Unspoken Rule:
”Explore a family or cultural rule no one said out loud but everyone obeyed—and what happened when you questioned it or broke it.”
I’ve got a large collection of prompts that lead in all kinds of directions. In our sessions, I’ll be giving generous time to write so you can not only write but revise a little, maybe add a missing piece. And then we’ll read what we’ve got and share careful feedback.
I’ll also be challenging each of you, over the course of the six weeks, to evaluate as you go, session by session; what really resonates with you; what is worthy of developing into a full stand-alone piece of fiction or memoir? You’ll be invited to select your personal “best” and improve and polish it for the final session. Our goal? To come away with something on its way to eventual submission to literary magazines or competitions. To see our creative work in print.

I’m the founder of Women At Woodstock, and I’ve been leading writing groups both online and in person at annual Women At Woodstock writing retreats since 2012. I finally started writing my own creative fiction just a few years ago. My short stories have been published in the Chicago Quarterly Review (twice), the Noyo River Review, and elsewhere.
